About Our Unit
Our Cardiology services, which are some of the most advanced in the country, cover a range of services including our acute cardiology ward, angiography suite and our coronary care unit, which is the PPCI Centre for Norfolk. In addition to this, we are the Norfolk Heart Attack Centre.
The Team
18 consultant cardiologists work at NNUH, and all our consultants undertake cardiology clinics. They are supported by a team of Band 5 and 6 nurses, and Junior and Senior Sisters.
Kilverstone Ward
Kilverstone is the Cardiology ward. With 37 beds, we mostly care for patients with heart problems including heart attack, angina and heart failure. The unit works closely with the Coronary Care Unit which is located across the corridor, and the Cardiology Elective Day Unit which cares for elective patients.
Coronary Care Unit (CCU)
CCU has eight single rooms, which are occupied by patients with heart attack, heart failure and other cardiac problems. Patients may be admitted straight from home, other hospitals or via other departments in the hospital.
Angiographic Suite
The Angiography Suite is where many of our highly specialist tests and treatments are carried out. Incorporated within this one aspect of cardiology, there are three purpose-built Cardiac ‘Cath Labs’. These theatre environments are used to diagnose and treat many cardiology conditions both electively and to provide live-saving emergency treatment.
We are proud to offer an emergency service for treatment of Heart Attacks; and we are one of only 52 centres to do so in the whole of Great Britain, 24hours a day and seven days a week.
Our other accomplishments include our specialisation in the provision of Complex Treatments for heart rhythms. We have a specially designed Cath Lab for Electrophysiological Studies and treatments and are taking part in ‘cutting-edge’ innovative procedures relating to Pacemakers.
In our department, cardiology staff work alongside each other with many members of the multidisciplinary team and with specialised individuals to provide the highest level of cardiology care in Norfolk.
We are also looking forward to our upcoming expansion project where we are almost doubling the number of Labs we run simultaneously. This all makes the Angiography Suite a fast-paced and exciting area to work, with plenty of opportunity for both personal and professional development.
